Marine Drive Improvements

The Marine Drive Corridor Improvements project was completed for Whatcom County Public Works as part of planning and civil design for proposed road widening/overlay, pedestrian, and stormwater system upgrades. The project area spanned roughly 2/3-miles, terminating at the Alderwood Avenue intersection. Work by Element included the coordination and logging of 9 geotechnical borings and 6 pavement cores at locations spaced along the project alignment, analysis of field and soil lab data, and assessment of stormwater infiltration feasibility. We summarized our findings in a report providing geotechnical recommendations for road widening and pavement overlay, stormwater management, earthwork activities and fills, temporary excavations and shoring, remediation of unsuitable subgrades and local uncontrolled fills, and utility construction. During design, Element consulted on additional soil input parameters for a pre-cast stormwater structure. Throughout the project, Element worked closely with PSE, the civil engineer, to address specific aspects of the arterial public road improvements.
