Camano Island Residence Reconstruction

Camano Island Residence Reconstruction

We routinely provide geohazard reviews to satisfy local County and Municipal code requirements for development near steep slopes or on sloping grades. This project included planning for reconstruction of a single-family residence along a tall coastal bluff slope on the west side of Camano Island, Washington. Redevelopment plans were not set at the time, so our study covered several properties along the steep and active shoreline slope. Element used a detailed reconnaissance-based approach to assess stability of the 75-foot-high bluff, consisting of partially exposed glacial deposits. Given the available upland area and client’s construction intentions in mind, we avoided unnecessary exploration. We performed a simplistic analysis based on geologic interpretation to quantify slope stability and determine a variable minimum setback by area to guide design and support permitting of the reconstruction.
